Frydenbø Elmarin has selected Nereida Energy to supply maritime battery systems for two ferries owned by Vestlandske Trafikk that operate in the Geirangerfjord.
The ferries are being converted to fully electric propulsion. They are scheduled to enter service from summer 2026, as Norway moves to enforce strict zero-emission requirements for vessels operating in UNESCO World Heritage fjords from January next year.
The contract covers two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems with a combined capacity of 17 MWh. A 12.7 MWh system will be installed on MF Hjørungavåg, while a 4.4 MWh system will be fitted on MF Jotunheim. Both vessels will operate solely on electric power once the conversions are completed.
The project marks Nereida Energy’s entry into the commercial maritime battery market and highlights how regulatory pressure in sensitive coastal areas is accelerating investment in electric ferry solutions.
Frydenbø Elmarin said the electrification programme is a key step toward cutting emissions in one of Norway’s most environmentally sensitive waterways, while ensuring compliance with upcoming operating restrictions.
