The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) has started a new initiative to explore the use of small modular nuclear reactors in commercial shipping as part of wider efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime industry.
The agency is asking shipbuilders, energy companies, technology firms and other industry participants to provide feedback on how nuclear-powered vessels could be introduced into the commercial fleet.
According to MARAD, the initiative is intended to help lower vessel operating costs, improve energy security and support the revival of US shipbuilding.
The programme will also examine issues including regulation, insurance, port access and workforce development linked to nuclear-powered ships.
US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the initiative forms part of the administration’s broader push to rebuild American maritime strength and expand domestic energy capabilities.
MARAD Administrator Stephen M. Carmel said the agency is focused on creating the conditions needed for private investment and wider industry adoption of the technology.
MARAD added that it is working alongside the US Coast Guard, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Energy on the project.
Comments on the initiative can be submitted until August 5, 2026.
