German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd and Switzerland-based logistics firm Kuehne+Nagel have expanded their partnership to include lower-emission ocean freight solutions using sustainable marine fuels.

Under the agreement, Kuehne+Nagel will use Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green product for cargo transported on the East Asia to North Europe trade lane between April and December 2026.

The companies said around 3,300 TEU of cargo will be covered under the arrangement, with the use of waste- and residue-based biofuels expected to avoid approximately 2,979 mt of CO2e emissions on a well-to-wake basis.

The agreement uses a book-and-claim mechanism, allowing verified emissions reductions to be allocated to customers regardless of the physical fuel allocation to individual ships or routes.

“With Ship Green, we offer a scalable solution that enables our customers to actively reduce their Scope 3 emissions today,” Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, said.

Paolo Montrone, Head of Trade Global Sea Logistics at Kuehne+Nagel, said the partnership would help accelerate the uptake of alternative marine fuels through transparent emissions data and commercially viable decarbonisation solutions.

Hapag-Lloyd is targeting net-zero fleet operations by 2045, while Kuehne+Nagel aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.
