German waste heat recovery specialist Orcan Energy has installed and commissioned a 100 kW efficiency PACK onboard a vessel operated by Norwegian shipping company Hagland Shipping.

The system uses Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology to recover waste heat from both the vessel’s exhaust gas and high-temperature jacket cooling water from its ABC main engine, converting the thermal energy into onboard electrical power.

Orcan Energy said the installation is the first of four planned retrofits for Hagland Shipping and demonstrates the scalability of waste heat recovery technology across commercial fleets.

The company said the system is expected to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining operational performance.

“As we continuously look for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of our fleet, capturing and utilizing waste heat is a highly logical step,” Paal and Øivind W. Aanensen, Co-CEOs of Hagland, said.

Andreas Sichert, CEO of Orcan Energy, said the project showed waste heat recovery could provide both emissions reductions and operational cost savings for shipowners.

Other project partners included Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes and Norway-based Gear Consult.
