Maersk is taking wind-assisted propulsion into container shipping for the first time, selecting UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies to supply a Rotor Sail for one of its 8,700 TEU vessels.
The 5-metre-diameter, 35-metre-high fixed Rotor Sail is scheduled for installation in mid-2027 and will be tested during the vessel’s regular North and South Atlantic voyages.
Anemoi says its technology uses aerodynamic lift to generate additional thrust, reducing fuel consumption and emissions when wind conditions are suitable.
The company has already deployed Rotor Sails across several vessel segments, particularly bulk carriers. The Maersk project marks its first application on a container vessel.
The system will be integrated with the vessel’s existing systems, with Anemoi supporting the engineering and installation process.
