US classification society American Bureau of Shipping has launched a new Nuclear-Ready Notation for marine and offshore assets designed to support future conversion to nuclear energy.
The notation is included in the organisation’s new Guide for Nuclear Ready Applications for Marine and Offshore.
ABS said the framework is intended to help shipowners, designers and builders incorporate future nuclear conversion considerations into vessel and offshore asset designs from the outset.
The notation applies to assets operating on conventional power systems including diesel-electric and battery-electric arrangements.
According to ABS, readiness considerations may include space allocation, structural arrangements, system interfaces and safety-related design features needed to support future nuclear conversion.
“The Nuclear-Ready Notation addresses a growing industry need to plan for future nuclear adoption in a structured way incorporating the technology’s specific requirements,” said Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at ABS.
