Alkagesta is seeking to strengthen its ULSFO supply across the Mediterranean, aiming to supply the grade in Spain by obtaining the necessary licence.

The regulation, under MARPOL Annex VI, limits sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.1% within Mediterranean waters. Alkagesta began supplying compliant fuels ahead of the rule’s enforcement, supporting ship operators in meeting the new standards.

“Our mission is to support our clients and partners in navigating the transition toward greener and more efficient marine fuels,” said Orkhan Rustamov, CEO of Alkagesta.

Spain is playing a key role in this transition, with major ports such as Algeciras, Valencia and Barcelona upgrading bunkering infrastructure to supply ULSFO and biofuels.

Alkagesta plans to obtain a local trading licence to expand its ULSFO operations in the Western Mediterranean and is preparing to introduce bio-marine fuels such as B24.

The company has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a major Spanish terminal operator to lease biofuel storage capacity at a new greenfield terminal.

“By investing early in compliant fuel solutions and infrastructure, we aim to lead the Mediterranean’s journey toward a low-emission maritime future,” said Asad Huseynov, Managing Director, Investment & Asset Management at Alkagesta.
