Finnish fuel systems specialist Auramarine has secured a contract to supply methanol fuel systems for six new Ro-Pax vessels ordered by Italy-based ferry operator Grimaldi Group.

The vessels are under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai, China, and are set to operate in the Mediterranean under the Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines brands.

Auramarine will provide complete methanol fuel supply systems covering fuel handling from bunkering to engine supply, including automation and emergency shutdown systems designed for methanol operations.

The ships will also be equipped to run on HFO, MGO and biofuels, giving operators flexibility to switch fuels depending on market conditions and fuel availability.

According to the companies, the vessels will include several energy-efficiency technologies such as optimised hull forms, shore power connectivity and silicon-based hull coatings, with expected CO2 reductions of more than 50% per cargo unit compared with existing ships on the same routes.

The six vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030.
