Axpo has completed its first ship-to-ship bio-LNG bunkering operation in Barcelona, supplying fuel to Mitsui OSK Lines’ (MOL) vehicle carrier Lapis Ace.

The delivery was carried out by Axpo’s LNG bunkering vessel Green Pearl, marking the company’s latest expansion in Spain following earlier operations in Malaga and Algeciras.

The operation is part of a broader agreement under which Axpo supplies bio-LNG to MOL across the Mediterranean. The partnership builds on an existing fuel supply arrangement between the two companies that began in 2025.

We’re proving that alternative marine fuels can be operationally reliable and cost-effective,” said Daniele Corti, Axpo’s Head of Small-Scale LNG, adding that growing activity in Spanish ports shows LNG and bio-LNG are becoming an increasingly important part of shipping’s decarbonisation pathway.

Axpo has been steadily expanding its LNG bunkering footprint in Southern Europe. The company launched LNG deliveries in Malaga in 2025 before extending operations to Algeciras, Barcelona and Sines in Portugal using the 7,500-cbm Green Pearl.

Earlier this year, Axpo also launched the LNG bunkering vessel Alisios LNG in Spain and continues to expand its bio-LNG supply network as demand for lower-carbon marine fuels grows.
