Sweden-based propulsion system provider Berg Propulsion said it has secured a contract to supply propulsion and control systems for four diesel-electric offshore support and firefighting tugs being built in Türkiye.
The vessels have been ordered by marine services company Smit Lamnalco from Turkish shipbuilder Uzmar Shipyard and are expected to begin operations in French Guyana.
According to Berg, the vessels will be the most powerful tugs of their type ever built in Türkiye, with each tug featuring bollard pull capacities above 130 tonnes.
The tugs are based on Canadian naval architect Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAmpage 6000-DE design and will each feature twin 4,000 kW electric motors.
Berg’s scope includes two MTA836 Z drive fixed-pitch azimuth thrusters, two MTT216 controllable-pitch bow thrusters, and the company’s MPC800 control system.
Berg Propulsion Eurasia Managing Director Mustafa Müslüm said the project is significant both commercially and technically, adding that the company was pleased to continue its cooperation with Uzmar on high-power tug projects.
Uzmar Group President and CEO A. Noyan ALTUG said the project demonstrates the shipbuilder’s capability to combine high bollard pull performance, lower emissions, and operational flexibility through diesel-electric propulsion solutions.
Berg added that demand is increasing for larger, higher-capacity tugboats as operators shift away from fleets of smaller vessels.
