Pacific Basin Shipping has announced plans to convert its bunker team into a new Sustainable Energy Solutions unit, marking a shift in how the company approaches fuel procurement and emissions compliance.

The company said the move is designed to support its broader decarbonisation and optimisation strategy, while allowing it to offer services beyond conventional bunkering as maritime energy markets evolve.

These include support for alternative marine fuels, emissions compliance and related commercial opportunities.

The transition comes ahead of the retirement of Rakesh Sharma, who will step down in the summer of 2026 after 15 years leading Pacific Basin’s bunker team. The company credited Sharma with playing a central role in the development and performance of its bunker operations.

Pacific Basin has appointed Henrik Røjel as Head of Sustainable Energy Solutions, effective from February 2026.

Røjel joins from DS Norden and brings experience in future fuels and decarbonisation services, including Book & Claim mechanisms and carbon credit trading. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.

James Chesman, Director of Operations, said, “The formation of our Sustainable Energy Solutions team marks a significant milestone in our wider journey to deliver sustainable shipping solutions for our customers.”
