Peninsula Explores Vessel Efficiency Measures to Cut Fuel Use and Emissions

Peninsula is stepping up efforts to improve energy efficiency across its fleet as the shipping industry searches for practical ways to cut fuel consumption and emissions ahead of wider alternative fuel adoption.

The company said its current work is focused on evaluating a broad range of operational and technical measures aimed at improving vessel performance, rather than relying on a single decarbonisation solution.

A major focus area is improving onboard fuel measurement.

Peninsula noted that many older vessels do not have the sensors needed to accurately monitor fuel consumption, with ongoing work underway alongside suppliers to improve data visibility and reporting quality.

The company is also studying several technical upgrades and operational practices, including hull cleaning, oil purification systems, fuel injection improvements and measures aimed at improving LNG efficiency.

For larger vessels, rigid sail technology is also being assessed as part of wider efforts to reduce fuel demand.

Peninsula added that voyage optimisation remains another key area under review, including the use of weather routing and voyage planning tools designed to reduce unnecessary sailing time and waiting periods.

Depending on vessel type and trading conditions, the company said such measures could deliver fuel savings of between 5% and 15%.

“There is no single solution when it comes to energy efficiency,” said Maria Angeles Lopez, Decarbonisation Manager at Peninsula.

“Our approach is to assess a range of options and identify where they can make a practical difference across our operations.”
