Port of Pasaia Adds Shore Power Capability Through Iberdrola Project

Spanish utility company Iberdrola has commissioned a shore power system at the Port of Pasaia aimed at reducing emissions from vessels during port calls.

The onshore power supply (OPS) infrastructure allows ships alongside the port to connect directly to the local electricity grid instead of operating onboard auxiliary engines while berthed.

Iberdrola said the system uses electricity generated from renewable sources, helping lower air pollution and noise levels around the port area.

The company added that the technology can also reduce onboard equipment wear and vibration during port stays while supporting cleaner energy management for maritime operations.

The project forms part of Iberdrola’s broader push to expand electrification technologies in sectors considered difficult to decarbonise, including shipping and port infrastructure.

Shore power systems are increasingly being deployed at ports globally as regulators and industry participants seek to reduce emissions from ships at berth.
