Japanese refinery Idemitsu Kosan has started supplying a bio-blended marine fuel made by mixing heavy fuel oil with FAME, becoming the first domestic petroleum refiner in Japan to offer such a product for oceangoing vessels.
The fuel is being supplied in cooperation with trading house Kanematsu, using marine loading facilities operated by Kanematsu Yusou to establish the supply system.
Idemitsu said deliveries have already begun to shipping companies, including Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, and that it is targeting total sales of 5,000 mt of the bio-blended fuel by March 2026, including supply to coastal shipping.
The company said the initiative is part of its efforts to support decarbonisation in the maritime sector.
