A cargo vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, according to an alert from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident occurred about 11 nautical miles north of Oman, UKMTO said in a warning issued on March 11 at 0435 UTC.

The report said the vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile, causing a fire onboard. The crew began evacuating the vessel and requested assistance following the incident.

In an update, the ship’s Company Security Officer (CSO) reported that the fire had been extinguished and that no environmental impact had been identified.

However, authorities said some crew members remain unaccounted for while investigations into the incident continue.

UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, linking the Persian Gulf with global shipping routes and carrying a significant share of global oil trade.
