Belgian gas shipping company Exmar has named what it says are the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia-powered midsize gas carriers (MGCs), marking a key step in alternative marine fuels.

The two vessels, previously referred to as H8389 and H8390, have been officially named ANTWERPEN and ARLON, the company said in a social media update.

Exmar said the project involved extensive development work, including contributing to interim guidelines at the International Maritime Organization for the use of ammonia as cargo, alongside type approval testing and on-site supervision at the shipyard.

Both vessels will sail under the Belgian flag and are set to be delivered to EXMAR Ship Management, which will oversee their operations.
