Econowind is moving into the deepsea segment with the launch of its 5-series VentoFoil, a larger wind-assisted propulsion system designed for oceangoing vessels.

The 30-metre steel suction wing builds on the company’s existing 3-series design and is aimed at helping shipowners cut fuel consumption and meet tightening environmental rules.

The move marks a strategic shift for Econowind, which has already sold more than 150 units primarily into shortsea and regional trades. It is now targeting larger vessels and longer trading routes, where wind-assisted propulsion can deliver stronger fuel savings.

The first unit will be installed on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping later this year, marking the system’s commercial debut.

“As a returning customer, we are pleased to use VentoFoils again on our vessels, now in the form of the 5-series,” said Johan Boomsma. “Wind propulsion has proven its value both economically and environmentally. With high fuel prices adding to the urgency, this is a logical next step for us.”

To support the expansion, Econowind plans to organise production in the Far East, closer to major shipbuilding centres.

The company said the launch reflects its view that deepsea shipping is the next growth market for wind-assisted propulsion, with its VentoFoil system using boundary-layer suction technology to generate additional thrust and reduce engine load
