Italy-based energy company Eni and Switzerland-headquartered cruise operator MSC Cruises have completed a trial of Enilive’s pure HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) diesel aboard the cruise ship MSC Opera.
The companies said one of the vessel’s engines operated for around 2,000 hours on 100% HVO without requiring engine modifications, while performance and emissions data were monitored.
According to the companies, the trial recorded a 16% reduction in NOx emissions and lower particulate emissions compared with conventional marine fuel. Lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions were also reduced by about 80%, linked to the use of biogenic feedstocks in the fuel’s production.
The test was supported by Finland-based engine manufacturer Wärtsilä and certification company Bureau Veritas, which independently validated the results.
Eni said the trial demonstrated that HVO could offer an immediately deployable option for shipping decarbonisation and compliance with FuelEU Maritime requirements.
