Norway-based dry bulk shipping company Klaveness Combination Carriers ASA (KCC) has selected Finland-based WE Tech Solutions to install shaft generators on nine vessels in its fleet, including six retrofits and three newbuilds due for delivery in 2026.
KCC said the systems allow vessels to generate electrical power from the main engine while sailing, reducing reliance on auxiliary engines and lowering fuel consumption.
The company said the installations are expected to improve overall engine efficiency, cut emissions and reduce maintenance requirements due to fewer auxiliary engine running hours.
KCC added that the systems have also reduced noise, vibration and heat in engine rooms, improving onboard working conditions for crews.
According to KCC, several retrofit projects faced challenges linked to limited engine room space, but the installations were completed successfully with support from WE Tech and shipyard partners.
The companies have worked together since 2014, with the latest installations forming part of KCC’s broader vessel efficiency and decarbonisation strategy.
