Norway’s Amon Maritime has secured NOK 298 million ($29.2 million) in investment grants from state-backed agency Enova to support the construction of three ammonia-fuelled bulk carriers.
The vessels will be built in the Kamsarmax segment, each with a capacity of around 80,000–85,000 DWT, and are designed to combine high energy efficiency with the use of carbon-free fuel. The project further strengthens Amon Bulk’s position as an early mover in ammonia-powered deep-sea shipping.
Amon said the newbuilds are tailored to meet the logistics requirements of Europe’s steel industry, which is facing rising pressure to decarbonise supply chains. The ships are being designed to comply with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the FuelEU Maritime regulation, with the company aiming to ensure strong commercial performance under tightening regulatory requirements.
“This grant provides the foundation to move forward with three additional Kamsarmax vessels. It marks a significant milestone for Amon Bulk and for the shipping industry’s green transition,” said André Risholm, CEO of Amon Maritime.
Including the latest award, Amon Bulk has now secured more than NOK 552 million in Enova funding to build five ammonia-powered bulk carriers. The first two vessels were announced earlier this year, with three more now added to the programme.
All five ships are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2030.
