Danish Energy Agency has approved the country’s first permit for a full-scale CO₂ storage facility, allowing the Nini West field in the Danish North Sea to be used for long-term geological storage.
The permit enables the licence holders behind the Greensand Future project — INEOS E&P, Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden — to store up to 2.4 million tonnes of CO₂ over a 30-year period. The Nini West field is located around 240 kilometers northwest of Esbjerg in the Danish sector of the North Sea.
“It is a significant milestone that we now have the first CO₂ storage facility in Denmark,” said Peter Christian Baggesgaard Hansen, Deputy Director General of the Danish Energy Agency, adding that storage is essential for delivering the climate benefits of carbon capture and storage.
Greensand Future expects the facility to be operational by mid-2026. Once in operation, it is set to become the first full-scale CO₂ storage site in the EU.
The approval follows a successful pilot phase under Project Greensand, which saw CO₂ injected into the Nini West reservoir in 2023, demonstrating a complete capture-to-storage value chain. The project will reuse the existing Nini-A offshore infrastructure, previously used for oil and gas production.
