Uniper Global Commodities SE and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited have signed a long-term binding offtake agreement for renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).
The agreement, described as the first of its kind for an Indian company, was exchanged in Ahmedabad between Uniper CEO Michael Lewis and AM Green founder and group chairman Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under the contract, Uniper will offtake up to 500,000 tonnes per year from AM Green’s green ammonia projects. The first shipment is expected as early as 2028 from the company’s initial 1 million tonnes per annum plant currently under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The companies said the deal represents a milestone for India’s ambition to become a major exporter of green hydrogen and green ammonia, and aligns with the objectives of the country’s National Hydrogen Mission.
For Uniper, the agreement supports the development of a diversified portfolio of renewable and low-carbon molecules for European customers. The company said renewable ammonia, as both an industrial feedstock and a potential hydrogen carrier, could play a role in decarbonising sectors including chemicals, fertilisers, refining and, over time, shipping.
Uniper and AM Green added that they will continue to work with certification bodies to ensure traceability and high-integrity reporting for European end-users.
