Elomatic is partnering with OliOil on the development of an autonomous oil spill response container designed for deployment from ships and ports.

The system is intended to react immediately after a spill by deploying unmanned boats that position containment booms automatically using artificial intelligence and robotic technology.

OliOil said the concept was originally developed through a Baltic Sea protection research project at LUT University.

Under the partnership, Elomatic will handle engineering work including the design of the container, lifting systems, ventilation, electrification and propulsion arrangements for the response boats.

The companies aim to advance the technology from its current pilot stage toward commercial-scale manufacturing.

According to OliOil, locating the containers on tankers and at ports could improve response times and help prevent oil from spreading before recovery equipment is deployed.

Elomatic’s expertise in both industry and marine technology is valuable,” said Kristian Laiho, Chair of the Board at OliOil.

“It’s great to work with a company bringing new solutions to environmental challenges,” said Karoliina Joensuu, Head of Industry Business Unit at Elomatic.
