MOL Group said Thursday that it is expanding its Szarvas biogas plant with a new biomethane unit due for completion by the end of 2026.

The development will allow the plant to upgrade biogas into high-purity biomethane suitable for injection into Hungary’s natural gas grid.

The company said the facility will produce more than 7 million m3/year of biomethane, equivalent to the annual gas consumption of about 8,500 households.

MOL said the project will be its first biomethane plant and the third such facility in Hungary.

The Szarvas site currently processes more than 40,000 mt/year of waste from regional meat production, along with 53,000 mt/year of residual waste including slurry and manure from nearby farms. The plant also uses about 18,000 mt/year of agricultural feedstock and produces nearly 12 million m3/year of biogas.

“Through the new investment, we are providing an effective response to the energy trilemma: we are increasing energy security while producing an energy carrier in an affordable and sustainable way,” said Ádám Horváth, New and Sustainable Businesses Vice President at MOL Group.
