Finland-based energy company Gasum reported strong growth in maritime bio-LNG demand in 2025, with biomethane volumes rising sharply from the previous year.

The company said biomethane represented 12.3% of total gas volumes sold to maritime customers in 2025, compared with just 0.8% in 2024.

Gasum linked the increase to tightening European shipping emissions regulations, particularly the implementation of FuelEU Maritime.

The regulation requires vessels operating in Europe to progressively reduce fuel carbon intensity over the coming decades, encouraging greater use of renewable marine fuels such as bio-LNG.

Gasum also pointed to the EU’s pooling mechanism as a factor supporting adoption, allowing shipowners using renewable fuels to share emissions compliance benefits with other operators.

According to Jacob Granqvist, vice president maritime at Gasum, demand for lower-emission marine fuel solutions is expected to continue growing as the shipping sector advances decarbonisation efforts.

The company added that future growth will depend on expanding biomethane production and maintaining efficient cross-border trade within Europe.
