The Port Authority of Valencia has cleared Shell Western LNG and Axpo Iberia to begin LNG bunkering operations at three Spanish ports as part of efforts to expand lower-emission marine fuel supply infrastructure.
Under the approvals, the companies will be permitted to supply LNG to vessels at Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia using tanker trucks.
The authorisations, granted for a six-year period, were approved during a recent board meeting of the port authority.
Valenciaport said the move aligns with its Net Zero Emissions Plan aimed at accelerating decarbonisation across its port network through the use of alternative fuels.
Alongside the LNG approvals, the authority also backed a separate renewable fuel production project at the Port of Sagunto involving the processing of used cooking oil and animal fats into advanced biofuels.
The project is expected to involve a EUR 20 million investment and operate under a 25-year concession agreement.
