Lloyd’s Register (LR) used Posidonia 2026 to expand its ties with South Korea’s shipbuilding sector, unveiling a range of new approvals and collaboration agreements covering gas carriers, tankers, nuclear propulsion, wind-assist technology and hybrid-electric vessels.
Among the announcements was an Approval in Principle (AiP) for DH Shipbuilding’s 88,000 cbm dual-fuel very large gas carrier (VLGC). LR also signed agreements with Korean partners to develop a 22,000 cbm LNG bunkering vessel and a Suezmax tanker equipped with a passive air lubrication system (ALS) aimed at improving fuel efficiency.
The classification society further joined a joint development project (JDP) examining the installation of an advanced small modular reactor (SMR) on a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC). The project involves HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), Hyundai Glovis, G-Marine Service and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
Other agreements announced at the event include a floating data centre (FDC) concept with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Capital Clean Energy Carriers, a 50,000 dwt MR tanker incorporating wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) with K Shipbuilding, bound4blue and LISCR, and a hybrid-electric LNG carrier design programme with KSOE and HHI.
